Progress Over Perfection: God’s Call to Fruitfulness

Jesus curses the fig tree

One of the most striking moments in Jesus’ ministry is when He curses a fig tree for failing to produce fruit (Mark 11:12-14). At first glance, this story seems harsh. But it carries a profound message: God expects us to bear fruit, and excuses for lack of progress don’t matter.

Have you ever felt stuck, waiting for the “perfect” moment to act? Maybe you’ve delayed pursuing a dream, helping someone, or stepping into a ministry because you didn’t feel ready. The story of the fig tree reminds us that God values faithfulness over perfection.

The Danger of Perfectionism

Perfectionism often paralyzes us. We tell ourselves:

  • “I don’t have enough resources.”

  • “What if I fail?”

  • “I need more time to prepare.”

But God isn’t looking for perfect people; He’s looking for obedient ones. Philippians 2:14 challenges us to act without grumbling or arguing, even when the work feels incomplete or messy.

The Power of Starting Small

The key to progress is starting where you are. Remember, every act of faith, no matter how small, has the potential to grow into something significant. Consider the following:

  • A small seed grows into a mighty tree.

  • A single act of kindness can change someone’s life.

  • A humble “yes” to God can lead to unimaginable opportunities.

Jesus’ parable of the mustard seed (Matthew 13:31-32) reminds us that even the smallest step of faith can lead to great results.

Reflection and Call to Action

Take time to reflect on your own life:

  • Are you waiting for the perfect conditions before acting?

  • What fruit is God calling you to produce in this season?

Stop waiting. Take the first step, no matter how small, and trust God to guide you.

Progress, not perfection, is what God desires. As Philippians 2:13 says, “It is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” Start today, and let Him multiply your efforts for His glory.
